I needed price tags for a craft show, but wanted to keep with the core of my business, which is to use reclaimed and recycled materials. After thinking about how I could DIY price tags, I figured out a great way – by recycling and using old paint chips!

DIY Price or Gift Tags
Because I just can’t throw anything away that looks like it would be useful for crafting, I had saved all the paint chips I had gathered when I was redecorating my entire house.
In the box of paint chips, I found the perfect ones to recycle! I needed three different sizes for my products – jewelry, purses and women’s clothing.
To get the correct shape and size, I found that the perfect tool was a punch from McGill.

Here’s what the underside of the punch looks like:

About the tag punch
I found that in order to center the paint chip to cut correctly, I had to do it with the punch upside down. That way I could see where the paint chip was going, and which size would be cut.
This cutter is great! And for a little under $25, it’s a bargain!
I used the punch to make hundreds of tags for crafts shows.
Tips for making the tags
To write on the tags, I used Sharpie Ultra Fine Markers.
To make the holes for the gold thread, I used a 1/16″ punch.
How to use the tags
Thread one end of the gold thread through a buttonhole, space between a knit or crochet stitch or through any opening on your item. Then just bring the two ends together and tie a knot. I’ve also used a tiny safety pin to attach the tag to items that had no place to thread the metallic thread through.
You can also recycle paint chips and make tags for holiday gifts! Add sequins, star stickers, vintage buttons or pressed flowers to you tags to make them extra special!
